July 6: Niagara International Music Festival - performance
We had our 7:00 breakfast call again this morning, followed by morning rehearsals by the girls. The girls have been really good about getting ready on time (with a little urging by the chaperones), and this has made the tour much easier so far. After breakfast, the choirs practiced for the massed concert on Saturday night, and then broke for lunch.
After lunch we boarded the bus, and drove to Niagara Falls to take the boat ride on the Maid of the Mist, a treat by the choir. This boat goes right up to Horseshoe Falls, and gives the passengers a phenomenal view of the falls, as well as a soaking. The girls and chaperones alike really enjoyed this boat ride. We then made our way up to Table Rock, at the top of the falls, for some quick souvenir shopping.
After returning to the college, the girls had a quick rehearsal for their performance tonight, and then ate dinner in the great hall. After dinner, we boarded the bus and went to Brock University in time for our sound check. Surprise of surprises, they were running behind schedule, and we actually had arrived 10 minutes early! After the sound check we settled in for the concert. We were treated to the instrumental talents of Pedagogico de Mexico, a percussion group. It seem that the girls have a particular interest in Andres (a.k.a. Mexico Boy), who claims to be 16, but doesn't look a day over 14. This group was followed by The Fort Wayne Childrens Choir, which did a very unusual number about the rain forests, and the Kansas Childrens Choir who did several choreographed numbers. These were some of Mrs. Tullock's favorites. Well, tonight they definitely saved the best for last. After some concerns about how our girls would fare, they definitely gave us their best. They were poised, focused, and very professional. They wowed the audience and ended to a standing ovation. We returned to the college, and the girls had some time for refreshments and celebration before lights out. It's funny, but each night we have fewer girls that want to stay up and talk!
[Note: E-mail access was not possible from the dorm in Niagara, so this journal entry was not received until the choir moved to their next stop on July 8.]
