Day 6
Sat., July 3, 1999
Everyone enjoyed sleeping in this morning after the busy day we had yesterday. After a late breakfast, we all rode the buses down the coast to Poole, an ancient harbor town. We were free to shop and eat lunch and enjoy the pretty weather (warm sun and cool breeze!). Many girls chose the Poole Pottery outlet as their main shopping stop -- so many nice things to choose from! Then back to Bournemouth, where the girls parted company with their chaperones for the afternoon. While most of the adults went antique shopping or strolled down the Promenade next to the ocean, the choir went with the tour guides and Chitra (our own tour director) to the beach for fun in the waves and a game of touch rugby. A wonderful time was had by all!
This evening, when the girls entered the dining room for dinner, the wait staff smilingly refused to serve them until they could hear them sing. So the girls sang for their supper, and the staff applauded loudly and long when they were through. The hospitality here has been outstanding -- the staff has gone out of its way to please us and help us feel welcome. Tonight, one waiter was especially entertaining when he read the menu to a table of girls in his approximation of a Southern drawl. The entire choir was soon giggling and clapping in appreciation!
After dinner, the choir prepared for their last concert in England, at St. Peter's Church here in Bournemouth. There were two other groups who performed first: an English high school band (ages 11-16) and the choir from the same high school. They played and sang quite well. Then it was our turn -- and again, the choir went beyond what they had previously done. By the time they finished Battle Hymn of the Republic, most of the audience was on its feet and clapping loudly. Even the other choir and band stood and whistled and cheered. What a positive memory to keep of beautiful Bournemouth!
Tonight the girls packed for our departure. Wake-up up call tomorrow: 5:30 a.m.(!). Paris, here we come!
